2011 Premier League Betting Preview
It’s no surprise to see that Manchester United head the betting for the upcoming Premier League season, though many bookmakers make United only very narrow favourites ahead of rivals Chelsea.
Manchester United are 9/5 chances with Stan James after making several signings already this summer, including the young Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea and the England international Ashley Young. At the time of writing, none of the big names have left Old Trafford but one of the club’s stalwarts, Paul Scholes, did retire at the end of last season following Manchester United’s Champions League Final defeat to Barcelona.
Chelsea will be the team to push Manchester United closest judging by the odds of 5/2 on the Stamford Bridge outfit. Chelsea have not made any big signings just yet, though they have made bids for Luka Modric of Tottenham, though they have brought in the young and already very successful manager Andre Villas-Boas as they bid to regain the Premier League crown. Villas-Boas won a trophy treble last season with former club Porto, impressively guiding them through the domestic season unbeaten.
On a sourer note, Chelsea have been hit by the news that one of their most influential players, Michael Essien, will be injured and therefore missing from the Chelsea team until the New Year.
At the other end of the scale StanJames.com have made Norwich their 2/1 favourites to finish bottom of the Premier League. Newly promoted Norwich last played in the Premier League in the 2004-05 season. Stan James don’t give much chance to the other promoted teams – Swansea and QPR – either, making them 9/4 and 5/1 respectively to finish bottom of the 2011/12 Premier League.
