It is a skill that requires a lot of practice and also a thorough understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackjackclassroom.com\/how-to-play-blackjack\">how the game of blackjack works<\/a>. There are quite a few things that a player needs to be able to develop into a good card counter. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thorough <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackjackclassroom.com\/blackjack-strategy\">knowledge of basic blackjack strategy<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Mastery over the game itself<\/li>\n<li>Ability to count down a deck fast<\/li>\n<li>Be able to work easily with numbers in the head<\/li>\n<li>Ability to remain calm and normal while counting cards<\/li>\n<li>Rigorous practice sessions to be able to count accurately over time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of all the above points, the most critical is an absolute knowledge and understanding of the basic blackjack strategy. Without that basic knowledge, trying to count cards would be a futile exercise. It has more to do <a href=\"http:\/\/saliu.com\/blackjack.html#casino\">with math<\/a> &#8211; statistics and probability &#8211; and less to do with memorizing numbers. As the dealer deals out cards from a shoe during a game of blackjack, players can use this technique to determine the cards left in the deck. This allows the player to analyze his position: does he have an advantage over the dealer and therefore should ride his hand, or is the dealer in a better enough position for the player to play safe?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A deck with more 10s and Aces is good for the player.<\/li>\n<li>A deck with more of small value cards is good for the dealer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Card counting helps the player figure out the odds of more 10-value cards and Aces being in the deck. This in turn allows the player to adjust his wagering and play strategy. That way the options favor the player more than the dealer, especially when he knows the deck has more 10-value cards and Aces than smaller value cards. The different moves that become favorable include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blackjack<\/strong>: With the shoe having more 10-value cards and Aces, the possibility of landing blackjacks is equal for both the dealer and the player. However, the player will earn a 3 to 2 payout, unlike the dealer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Double down<\/strong>: Doubling down is a good choice if the player is looking for a 10-value card. With the shoe having more of 10-value cards and Aces, the double down option can help earn good rewards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stand<\/strong>: The player could look to stand on totals between hard 12 and hard 16 while the dealer may not opt to do so. In case of a shoe with more 10-value cards and Aces, standing is the easier way to go as against hitting, as the latter may result in the hand going bust.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Split<\/strong>: Splitting is usually a good option when the player has a high-value hand. If the shoe has more 10-value cards and Aces, splitting becomes a safe option to look at.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insurance bet<\/strong>: A good card counter will know when there are more 10-value cards and Aces in the deck. That makes it easy for him to take <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blackjack#Insurance\">the insurance<\/a> bet option when he sees the Ace as the dealer\u2019s face up card.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surrender<\/strong>: In a game where the shoe has more Aces and 10-value cards, the option of surrender also becomes a good alternative as it still allows the player to save on the original wager even if the dealer has a strong hand. The following are some of the popular card counting systems in use.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hi-Low<\/li>\n<li>KO<\/li>\n<li>Hi Opt I<\/li>\n<li>Hi Opt II<\/li>\n<li>Halves<\/li>\n<li>Omega II<\/li>\n<li>Red 7<\/li>\n<li>Zen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among all these systems, one of the most popular is the Hi-Lo card counting system. We take a look at this system in a little more detail next.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Counting Cards Using the Hi-Lo Card Counting System<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first card counting strategy was introduced in the 1960s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_O._Thorp\">by Edward Thorp<\/a>. Thorp was a professor of math<a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\"> at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)<\/a> and came out with the Ten Count system <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardothorp.com\/\">in his book Beat the Dealer<\/a>. However, while the Ten Count system is the first, the most popular is the Hi-Lo card counting system.<\/p>\n<p>The Hi-Lo card counting system was formulated in 1963 by Harvey Dubner. It has been used and also discussed extensively by blackjack players and writers respectively. The system is simple and that is one of the main reasons for its popularity. This is how the Hi-Lo system works.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For each card, assign a specific value. The values for the different cards are as follows:\n<ul>\n<li>Cards 2 to 6: +1<\/li>\n<li>Cards 7 to 9: 0<\/li>\n<li>Cards 10 to Ace: -1<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Based on the values assigned to the cards that have been dealt, keep a \u2018running count\u2019.\n<ul>\n<li>The running count keeps getting updated with the latest data after every deal.<\/li>\n<li>This is done by adding or subtracting numbers from the existing running count based on the values arrived at using the numbers given in the first step.<\/li>\n<li>An increase in the running count is good for the player as the house edge comes down.<\/li>\n<li>A decrease in the running count is good for the dealer as the advantage shifts to the casino.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Determine the \u2018True Count\u2019.\n<ul>\n<li>The True Count helps in the present scenario where casinos use multiple decks.<\/li>\n<li>To determine the True Count, divide the running count by the number of decks left in the shoe.<\/li>\n<li>The True Count is directly proportional to the player bet \u2013 the greater the True Count the higher the player can go with his wager.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>In keeping with the above observation, vary your bet according to the level of the True Count.\n<ul>\n<li>Bet big when the True Count rises.<\/li>\n<li>Bet small when the True Count goes down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes, knowing just the True Count may not be enough; that is when a table of Index Numbers can be really helpful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With a table of Index Numbers, betting becomes easier. There are many of them around; 2 of these are Illustrious 18 and Fab 4 and were listed by Don Schlesinger in Blackjack Attack. There are different Index Numbers that a player can use. Card counting can be a bit tricky though.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title active\">What is card counting in Blackjack?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content active\">\n<p>Card counting is an effective way to get an advantage over the casino, by keeping track of the cards that have been dealt. Based on that information, the player is in a position to judge whether the situation is in their favor or in favor of the dealer. Based on that, players can increase the size of their bet when they realize that they have higher chances of winning the game and decrease their bets when the chances are in favor of the dealer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">How does card counting in Blackjack work?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>The basic principle behind card counting is simple and it is based on the fact that, generally speaking, cards of high value, particularly aces and cards with a value 10 are in favor of the player, whereas low-valued cards give advantage to the dealer. Bearing that in mind, the player assigns a value to every card and then counts the cards that have already been dealt. At a certain point, after a sufficient number of hands have been dealt, the player is able to reach a conclusion whether the cards that remain in the shoe\/deck give them the upper hand. That helps them decide what to play next and how much they should bet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">Is it really possible to get a negative house edge in Blackjack by counting cards?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>It depends on the variant of the game in question, but yes, it is possible. If by applying the basic strategy, or its appropriate variation, you can get up to a 0.4% house edge, then by counting cards, the house edge may drop to below zero, in some cases even as low as -2%, which means that the player can expect to actually win more than the casino, in the long run. Then you simply add and subtract for every drawn card. Then you add the figure of the number of decks that have been dealt and the decks that are left and based on that you\u2019ll know where you stand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">Is there more than one Blackjack card counting system?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>Yes, there are multiple Blackjack card counting systems. Some systems are a lot more complicated and the applied value of the cards may differ. For example, there is a system called \u2018halves\u2019, where cards can be given values like +0.5, +1.5, or -0.5 and -1.5. More complicated systems can be more efficient, they can improve the player\u2019s winning chances by more than simpler, more basic systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">So, counting cards is used to determine whether I should increase my Blackjack wager or not?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>Yes, you can make permutations to the value of your bet, or even choose to opt in and skip that hand on the basis of the result of your card count, but card counting can also increase your playing efficiency. Card counting can help you make better judgements and even improve your Blackjack strategy. When the result from the card counting is taken into consideration there might be some minor changes in the Blackjack strategy. Moreover, if you count cards, you might realise that there is a situation where taking insurance is actually a smart bet. And that is the only occasion when it is good to take insurance \u2013 when it is supported by your card count.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">Is Blackjack card counting illegal?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>Card counting is not illegal as such and there can be no legal consequences for players who count cards, unless they are using a device which counts the cards for them, or another person who is doing the counting. Casinos are aware that card counting makes the game more favorable for the players, so they try to stop players who count cards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wi-toggle toggle-mode\">\n<h3 class=\"toggle-title\">How do casinos tackle Blackjack card counting?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"toggle-content\">\n<p>Many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/quora\/how-casinos-know-that-you_b_6857442.html\">casinos ban players who they suspect are counting cards<\/a>. As a result many players who don\u2019t count cards are banned under the suspicion that they have been counting. As card counting isn\u2019t illegal, many players have contested the practice of casinos to ban card counters.
